U.S. Women's Open: Lee tied for 3rd, 6 ams clear of cut line
PINEHURST, N.C. (June 20, 2014) -- Another day, another superb effort for amateur Minjee Lee at the U.S. Women's Open.
Lee, who hails from Australia, fired a second-round 71 and is tied for third place entering the weekend at Pinehurst No. 2, site of the back-to-back U.S. Men's and Women's Opens.
Lee is no stranger to high levels of competition. She won the U.S. Junior Girls title in 2012 and has claimed the last two Australian Women's Amateur championships. This past winter, she was victorious at a professional event in her home country.
Canada's Brooke Mackenzie Henderson is four shots off of Lee's leading amateur pace. Mackenzie, who recently won the Women's Porter Cup title with a closing 63, shot 73 on Friday and is tied for 14th place.
Mathilda Cappeliez of France is the next best performing amateur at Pinehurst. She shot a 70 on Friday and stands clear of making the weekend cut.
Reigning U.S. Women's Amateur Champion Emma Talley is also in good position of making the weekend cut. The University of Alabama star shot 75-73 in Rounds 1 and 2, respectively and is tied for 50th.
Chisato Hashimoto and Andrea Lee are currently tied for 57th and appear to be in the clear and ready for their early weekend tee times. Lee stormed back with a second-round 70 and both players are tied for 57th. The top 60 players and ties move on to the weekend.
Among those not making the weekend cut is 11-year-old Lucy Li, who shot a second-straight 78 after making headlines as the youngest to ever qualify for the U.S. Women's Open.
