Pawleys Island, S.C. (August 3, 2014) – Due to unplayable course conditions, the 83rd edition of the South Carolina Amateur Championship was reduced to a 54-hole event and Andrew Novak was declared the winner.

After 1.25 inches of rain fell overnight and a total of almost four inches over the last three days, The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island took as much as it could handle. With unpassable fairways, ponds in the bunkers and overall saturated conditions, play was not possible within the hours needed to complete the final round.

Round 3 Recap

After a tumultuous third round of the South Carolina Amateur at The Reserve Golf Club of Pawleys Island, Andrew Novak continues to lead by two strokes.

Two weather delays, including heavy rains and significant lightning, kept the field off the course for nearly four hours. A saturated course also forced South Carolina Golf Association tournament officials to make the course play as a par 71, changing the short par-four sixteenth hole into a 135 yard par-three.

Undeterred by the delays and conditions many players came out swinging including the thirty-six hole leader. Novak, chipped in three times, on holes three, four and six, making two birdies and saving par. He also ran in a putt from off the fringe on the par-5 13th hole for eagle. There were four bogies on the scorecard though, leaving Novak with a third round score of one under par, 70 and a three day total tournament lead of eight under, 207.

Two other players that had spectators abuzz included Jon Weiss of Florence and Jonathan Hardee of Greer. Weiss, who plays collegiately for James Madison University, started his round on the back nine and made seven birdies with two pars for a 28. He followed that up with a one-under 35 on his second nine for a total of 63. Rounds of 82-68-63 leave him six shots back at 213. Hardee is headed to play for Alabama this fall and carded seven birdies and a lone bogie on his final hole to find himself two shots off the pace in second place at six under 209.

Six other players are under par including Caleb Sturgeon and Ross Thomson, three shots of the lead. The rest of the field will be trying to chase down Novak as he vies to go wire-to-wire.
