THE WOODLANDS, Texas — The opening round of play at the 10th annual Carlton Woods Invitational displayed the difficulties of the 7,300-yard, par 72 course. None of the 47 players in the mid-amateur field broke par, with three players tied atop the leaderboard with two-over 74.
Mark Mance of Whitefish, Mont., Ed Sanchez of San Antonio, and John Derrick of Waco share a one-stroke lead after Tuesday's first round.
Mance got off to a rough start with 40 on the front side, but rebounded with two-under 34, including three birdies, on the back. Sanchez posted 37 on each side, while Derrick had one-under 35 on the front before bogeying three of his last four holes to shoot 39 on the closing nine.
Scores were high on day one, with just less than half of the field breaking 80. Six players are tied for fourth place at 75 including 2014 USGA Men's State Team participant Aaron Hickman and 2011 Texas Mid-Amateur champion Beau Davis.
In the Senior Division, Steven Hakes of San Diego, Calif. broke par to take a one-shot lead into the second round. He leads David Ortego of Spring, Texas and Randy King of Kilgore, Texas, as well as four other players at two-over 74.
