MYRTLE BEACH, SC (June 11, 2015) – Christian Salzer of Sumter is the 57th SCGA Junior Champion after the final round at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, SC. Salzer earned the title by shooting rounds of 71-76-69 with a three day total of even par 216. After holding the lead following the first round, Salzer slipped a little on day two and found himself one shot back of Cowpens’ Nick Willis and 2014 Champion Jack Parrott of Columbia heading into today. Parrott was holding onto his lead but finished with back-to-back bogeys on the final two holes and Salzer took advantage.
“I made the turn at one under and got it to four [on the day] then I made bogey,” Salzer commented. “I played good and putted really well on the final three holes!” Parrott finished one shot back at one over par for the tournament 217.
In the Boys 13-14 Division, Drayton Stewart of Charleston held on to his lead and went wire to wire. “I knew I wasn’t playing my best but I just tried to do the best that I could,” he said. Drew Weary came in second six shots behind Stewart. Scores were again lower for the second consecutive day while players continued to dote about the course and facilities at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
The low eight scores of the tournament automatically qualified for the 40th Annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Team Matches to be played at Berkeley Hall Club in Bluffton, South Carolina. These coveted Matches are the longest running interstate matches in the country. Those qualifiers include Salzer, Parrott, Kent Lawrence, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, Willis, Logan Sowell of Kershaw, Wil Sheppard of Mt. Pleasant, Patrick Golden of Murrells Inlet and Stewart from the younger age bracket.
The matches will be played July 24-25 in Bluffton.
