Burrell, Chapman lead at Maine Mid-Amateur
CUMBERLAND, Maine — Jay Burrell used an ace on the par-three 11th hole to propel him into a tie for first place in the first round of the 2015 Maine Mid-Amateur Championship currently being contested at Val Halla Golf Course in Cumberland.
Burrell, who is the JV golf coach for the Greely golf team, is tied with Fox Ridge's Craig Chapman at one-under 71 in today's first round. They are the only two players under par thus far in the tournament, with Joe Alvarez next at one-over 73. The three are slated to go out in the final pairing tomorrow morning.
Chapman, who played in the fifth group of the day had the solo lead before Burrell -- one of 10 Val Halla members entered in the 67-player field — came in with a match. It was Burrell's second hole in one and his first in a major championship. It was witnessed by his fellow competitors James O'Connor of the Ledges and Heath Cowan, a golf coach himself, from Lakewood.
