AJ McInerney leads early at Las Vegas Amateur

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — UNLV senior AJ McInerney, who is the reigning Nevada State Match Play champion, is up by two shots halfway through the Las Vegas Amateur Championship.
On a day where scoring was abundant at Las Vegas Golf Club, McInerney birdied four of his first seven holes en route to a 65, with Darren Michels II trailing two behind at 67.
Three are tied for third at 68, while another five are tied for sixth at 69. Part of the group at 69 is recent Stocker Cup winner and 2014 Senior British Amateur Brady Exber, as well as 2014 Nevada Mid-Amateur champion Kenny Ebalo.
Seventeen players are within five shots of the lead, including eight players at even par 70.
