Steve Humphrey grabs hold of Dixie Senior Amateur lead
Steve Humphrey
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — Steve Humphrey carded two-under par 70 on day two of the Dixie Senior Amateur to take command of the lead away from a six-time winner. The winningest golfer in Dixie Senior history, Rick Woulfe, was two ahead of the field after an opening-round 72 at TPC Eagle Trace. But he struggled to a 76 in the second round and dropped to three back in a tie for third place with K.C. Fox.
Humphrey began the day with five birdies in his first nine holes, going out in 31 before returning in 39, which included two bogeys and a double bogey. At 1-over par 145, he leads Scott Hurley (74-73) by two shots.
Woulfe won his first title in 2000, the fourth year of the tournament, then won back-to-back between 2004 and 2005 before becoming a three-peat winner from 2008 to 2010.
Fox went low on Wednesday, as well, coming in with 71 to jump into a tie for third place after an opening-round 77.
Two-time defending champion Doug Hanzel, who just recently lost in a playoff the Crane Cup Senior to Jack Hall, is not in this year's field.
The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Thursday.
