Colby Harwell
THE WOODSLANDS, TX (May 4, 2016) - First round co-leader Colby Harwell is now leading alone following the second round of play at the Carlton Woods Invitational. Harwell shot a second round 1-over 73 on the Club at Carlton Woods Fazio Course and is the leader by one at even-par.
Scoring proved to be very difficult during Wednesday's second round and Jess Bonneau was the only player to break par shooting a 1-under 71. In fact only four players have broken par all week and nobody has shot better then a 71.
Harwell, the 2013 Carlton Woods Invitational champion, began his day with a eight consecutive pars before the first of his three bogey's on No. 9. However, Harwell was able to manage birdies on holes 11 and 14 to minimize the damage. His second day 73 matched the fifth best score of the round.
Although Harwell holds the 36-hole lead an entire stable of pursuers are hot on his heels. Four players are presently 1-over for the tournament and one-stroke behind, tied for second. The group is comprised of Clint Frost, Craig Smith, Edward Fryatt and Joe Palmer.
Draegen Majors and Brady Exber, playing his final Carlton as a mid-amateur, are one shot further back at 2-over and tied for sixth.
First round co-leader Aaron Hickman is 4-over and tied for ninth while the third player to share the 18-hole lead, Sean McCauley is tied for 17th and 6-over.
Defending champion Derek Meinhart is tied for 24th sitting at 9-over.
ROUND ONE RECAP
Following a weather delay to begin the day three players shot 1-under 71 and share the lead after the first round of the Carlton Woods Invitational. Aaron Hickman, Sean McCauley and Colby Harwell are the only three players currently under-par on the difficult Fazio Course at The Club at Carlton Woods.
Hickman, fresh off a tie for seventh at last weekends Coleman Invitational, sprinted out of the gates with birdies on the first two holes. Those would be his only birdies of the day and besides a bogey on No. 5 it was pars the rest of the day for Hickman.
McCauley had a bit more of an uneven scorecard with four birdies and three bogeys. After beginning his round with an opening hole bogey on No. 10, McCauley had back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12. McCauley recorded consecutive bogey's again on No's. 18 and 1.
The third player sharing the lead is Colby Harwell. Beginning on No. 10, Harwell was 1-under after No. 17 but a double-bogey dropped him back to 1-over. Harwell rebounded with two birdies on the front nine to get back into red figures.
Four players are tied for fourth at even-par after the opening 18-holes while another five are 1-over and tied for eighth. Defending champion Derek Meinhart struggled in the first round shooting a 4-over 76. Meinhart is currently tied for 23rd.
