Gunn Yang was heroic for San Diego State
VARIOUS LOCATIONS ACROSS THE U.S. (May 18,
2016) -- The NCAA Regionals concluded today, and
the top five teams from each location have been
determined.
As well, the highest finishing individual
not on a qualifying team from each location will
advance to the National Championship from May 27-
June 1 at the gorgeous Eugene Country Club in
Oregon.

ALBUQUERQUE (NM) REGIONAL
Course: Championship Course at the
University of New Mexico - 7555 yards
Host School: University of New
Mexico
Jon Rahm paced Arizona State to a top seed position
at 4-under. Rahm was the only player to post an
under-par total on the University of New Mexico
Championship Course. But Rahm wasn't the story of
the day, not even close.
The playoff for the last team spot, in which all
five players from the two fifth-place tying teams
(San Diego State and Texas A&M) have to play
a nerve wracking hole (or more) to see who
advances. San Diego State's No. 5 player (remember
the 2014 U.S. Amateur Champ?) stepped up and
holed his second shot for an albatross, that rare bird
so seldom seen on the golf course. It was a 7-iron
from 202 yards.
“Best golf shot I’ve seen in my coaching career,”
Ryan Donovan, San Diego State’s head coach told
Golfweek.
A few minutes later, Ryann Ree made eagle for the
Aztecs -- he and Yang combined for 5-under alone.
San Diego State's
5-under score on the 544-yard par 5 pushed them
past Texas A&M (they posted a respectable 2-
under) and on to Eugene Country Club.
Playing off for the individual spot, Cameron
Champ of Texas A&M advanced over Peter Kim
of Army on the second playoff hole (the ninth) with
an eagle to Kim's par. (Both players birdied the first
playoff hole.) Birdie-eagle...that will usually do it!

FRANKLIN (TN) REGIONAL
Course: Vanderbilt Legends Club -
7190 yards
Host School: Vanderbilt University
Texas, paced by Doug Ghim (14-under) proved
why they are the top ranked Division I team in the
nation, as they won the Franklin, TN Regional by 11-
shots over host Vanderbilt. And as well as Ghim
played, he was edged for medalist honors by 2-shots
by Houston's top player, Michael Perras. Perras
posted two bogey-free rounds of 65 and 66 plus a 69
in the second round. Individual kudos to Ryan Cole of
James Madison -- playing as an individual -- for
matching Ghim's score of 14-under.

Oklahoma State player Kristoffer Ventura (from
Norway) took individual medalist honors, pacing his
team to a top seed as they won their qualifier by 19
shots over Oklahoma. Just a week ago, Ventura
posted an amazing 9-under 62 on the 6800 yard
Wichita Country Club during US Open Local Qualifying,
easily earning medalist honors. His score was just
one off the course record held by former PGA Tour
player (and, it should be noted, Oklahoma State
grad) Grier Jones. Only one player bettered 70 over
three rounds at the difficult Karsten Creek, Stratten
Nolen of Oklahoma State in the first round.
