(May 23, 2016) - The U.S. Men's and Women's Amateur Four-Balls continue until Wednesday, but on Sunday the medalist winners were crowned. At Winged Foot Golf Club former Temple teammates
Brandon Matthews and Patrick Ross led the field, finishing the two qualifying days 14-under. In women's Four-Ball action at Streamsong Resort,
Pauline Del Rosario and Princess Mary Superal posted a 36-hole, 12-under-par winning tally.
Of course there is still a whole heck of a lot of work left for both team's during the next three days, but all of us here at Amateur Golf must tip our hat and say job well done! Matthews and Ross bested 131 teams while Del Rosario and Superal beat 63 other pairings.
NCAA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the first time in school history St. Leo (FL) has captured the national championship. In the final match St. Leo defeated Chico State (CA) 3-2, to win the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship. St. Leo freshman Hugo Bernard also won individual honors.
In the NCAA Women's Division I Championship, USC holds the team lead and it is Duke's Virginia Elena Carta pacing the medalist chase after three rounds of play.
SOUTHEASTERN CHAMPIONS
John Engler Jr. captured the Georgia Mid-Amateur by one-stroke with a 6-under score. In the inaugural Carolinian Amateur Sam Wimbrow won the title, earning an exemption into the Carolinas Amateur to be held at the Country Club of Charleston on July 14-17.
OVERSEAS
Scotsman Barry Hume continued his storied amateur career, as he captured the Welsh Amateur Open finishing two-strokes clear of the field at 8-under. In the rain shortened French Amateur Stroke Play Championship Iván Cantero defeated Marco Penge on the second playoff hole.
