RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (August 20, 2016) -- Tiffany Chan and Albana Valenzuela both share the amateur lead following rounds of even-par 71 on the first day of the Women's Olympic Tournament. They will begin the second round at the Olympic Golf Course tied for 26th and six-strokes behind Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand.
Chan, a senior at USC, playing for Hong Kong had an up and down Wednesday. Following a bogey on the 4th Chan birdied the next three holes to reach 2-under. Chan remained there until the 10th and 11th holes where she carded a triple-bogey and bogey on consecutive holes to drop to 2-over. With still seven holes remaining Chan battled back to even-par with birdies on Nos. 13 and 16.
Valenzuela, playing for her native Switzerland, had a much more straight forward day with one bogey and one birdie. The incoming Stanford freshman birdied the 5th hole.
The third amateur in the field this week, representing Ireland, is Leona Maguire who shot a 3-over 74 on Wednesday and is tied for 44th. The Duke star got off to a quick start with an opening hole birdie before bogeying the 2nd and 6th holes to turn in 1-over 36. Things got a bit more difficult for Maguire on the back nine as she she double-bogeyed the 10th and then bogeyed the 15th. Maguire was able to gain some salvation with a birdie on the 16th.
