Hornblower Senior: Jack Kearney wins with final hole birdie

PLYMOUTH, MA (August 23, 2016) -- With a birdie on the final hole Jack Kearney won the 2016 Hornblower Senior by one-stroke over Don Reycroft.

Kearney, a three-time George M. Cohen Massachusetts Golf Association Senior Player of the Year, opened with a 2-over 71 at Plymouth Country Club on Monday before firing a 1-under 68 on the second day to finish 1-over.

The day got off to a good start for Kearney as he birdied the 1st and 7th holes to turn in 1-under 33.

in the Super Senior Division Ray Richards captured the title.

Playing in front of Kearney was the hard charging Don Reycroft who finished 2-over. Reycroft shot the low round of the tournament, a 2-under 67 on Tuesday but ultimately fell one-stroke shy of a playoff.

Beginning with a birdie on the 6th hole Reycroft made his move with a 3-under in four hole stretch. The run included a hole-in-one on the par-3 8th. Reycroft was able to momentarily tie for the lead with a birdie on the closing hole only to have Kearney roll in his birdie a short time later.

ROUND ONE RECAP

With rounds of 1-over 70 Keith Smith and Jeff Page share the first round lead at the Hornblower Senior. The two will carry a slim lead into the final day of play at Plymouth Country Club.

Smith birdied five holes, four of which came on the front side, during his first round as he went 35-35 on Monday.

Page moved to the top of the leaderboard with a three birdie day. The round started with a birdie on the first before consecutive birds came on the 15th and 16th holes. Page posted sides of 36-34.

Three players; William Lenhardt, Jack Kearney and Doug Crawford tallied rounds of 2-over 71 and they are one off the pace.

An additional three players are 3-over and two-strokes behind.

In all 17 players are within five-strokes of the opening day lead.

ABOUT THE Hornblower Senior

Style of play: Two day - 36 hole stroke play – no cut. Handicap required: GHIN index of 8.0 or lower. Must be at least 55 years of age or older as of the start of the tournament. Super Senior division for those aged 65 and older. The Hornblower Committee will be responsible for acceptance or rejection of all entries.
