SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (August 27, 2016) -- It's no
secret that the major golf equipment manufacturers
employ some top notch golfers. Players who have
achieved success at the top level have wound up in
the engineering or Tour departments, especially at
Ping.
Cory Bacon, one of Ping's designers, brought
home the Arizona Amateur title today in a 3-and-2
victory over defending champ Ken Tanigawa, a tough
customer on any day -- especially in the final match.
After defeating medalist Sam Triplett on the first
extra holes in Friday's semifinal match, Bacon was
up against another tough customer in Ken Tanigawa.
Not only was he the defending champ, Tanigawa was
also the low amateur in the Arizona Open, tying for
sixth place overall.
But it was all Bacon today. The Ping club
designer never trailed, and moved to 3-up after the
10th hole before dropping the short par-4 12th to a
birdie. Bacon got the 3-up advantage back at the
tough 14th when Tanigawa bogeyed, and held it until
there weren't enough holes left for the defending
champ to mount a comeback.
