BALTIMORE, MD (April 28, 2017) - Led by medalist pace setter Dylan Meyer No. 8 Illinois finds themselves in a familiar spot after day one of the Big Ten Championship. Currently the only team under-par at Baltimore Country Club the Illini are 11-under and 14 shots clear of second place Ohio State as they look to continue their dominance of the conference tournament. This weekend Illinois is looking for their third consecutive Big Ten Championship and eighth in the last nine years.
2016 Western Amateur victor Dylan Meyer took the individual lead with a Big Ten Championship record 7-under 63 and he will carry a three-stroke advantage into Saturday's second round. Meyer began his day with a bogey but from that point on he was narrowly flawless. Following a 2nd hole par Meyer birdied Nos. 3-5 to reach red figures at 2-under. Birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 pushed Meyer to 4-under but only briefly as he dropped a shot on the 13th. Unfazed the 2015 Big Ten Freshman of the Year birdied the next two holes and then eagled the par-4 16th.
A trio of others in the Illinois lineup turned in strong first round performances; Nick Hardy (3rd; -3), Edoardo Lipparelli (T4; -1) and Giovanni Tadiotto (T9; E).
Behind Meyer in the individual race comes Thomas Longbella (Minnesota) in second place at 4-under, Hardy is third while Will Grimmer (Ohio State), Ryan Lumsden (Northwestern), Lipparelli, Brian Carlson (Purdue) and Caleb Ramirez (Ohio State) share fourth at 1-under.
Ohio State will begin the second round in second place at 3-over, Purdue is 4-over in third place, Northwestern sits in fourth place at 6-over and in fifth it is Penn State at 7-over.
