CRESWELL, Oregon (July 11, 2017) -- Rising Oregon junior Sam Foust fired a 2-under 70 to finish 5-under and earn medalist honors at the 116th Pacific Northwest Amateur.

Playing at Emerald Valley Golf and Resort, Foust started the day three behind Patrick Sato before rallying to the top-seed on Tuesday with a four birdie, two bogey round. Foust, whose best finish for Oregon came as a sophomore when he tied for 27th at the Husky Individual, converted his second round birdies on Nos. 4, 7, 12 and 15.

Behind Foust the top-five was rounded out by a trio of players tied for second at 3-under; Edwin Yi (Oregon), Henry Lee (Washington) and Reid Hatley while Carson Berry (2018 Oregon State commit) and Chase Carlson (Colorado Christian) shared fifth at 2-under.

First round leader Patrick Sato of Seattle ended up in a tie for ninth at even-par.

With two days of stroke play now complete the field has been trimmed to the top-64 for the beginning of match play on Wednesday.

ROUND TWO RECAP

The Pacific Northwest Amateur is underway at Emerald Valley Golf and Resort, with Patrick Sato of Bellevue, Washington out in front by one.

Sato, an incoming senior at Seattle University, fashioned a 6-under 66, feeding off two par-5 eagles, 3 birdies, and just a single bogey. He is chased by Drew McCullough (Richland, Wash.) at 67. Another shot back at 68 are both Derek Bayley (Idaho) and Henry Lee (British Columbia) as 18 players in the talented field managed to shoot under par rounds.

The second round of qualifying for the historic match play event gets underway on Tuesday.

ABOUT THE PNGA Amateur

First held in 1899, the Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur is one of the country’s longest running amateur championships. Held annually at world-class courses throughout the Pacific Northwest, this championship is played in the same format as the U.S. Amateur and features an impressive list of past champions that include; Nick Flanagan, Ben Crane, Jeff Quinney, Bill Sander, and Tiger Woods. Eligibility is open to members of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association and top amateurs throughout the world invited via Presidential Invitation. Each year’s champion earns a hosted exemption in to the Pacific Coast Amateur and Sahalee Players Championship.

The Championship will be conducted in two stages:

Stroke Play – All players must complete the 36-hole stroke play qualifying in order to determine the 64 players who will advance to match play. In the event of a tie for the final qualifying spot(s), a sudden- death playoff will be used to determine the qualifiers. In the event of a tie for the Qualifying Medalist, a sudden-death playoff will commence.

Match Play – The General Numerical Draw will be in effect. Single elimination match play. 36-hole Championship Final Match. All other matches are 18 holes.
