Hayes rises to the challenge, finishes off Maine Mid-Am title

John Hayes faced some pressure over the final few shots of the Maine Mid-Amateur on Sunday, but he delivered admirably. As he stood on the 18th tee at Fox Ridge Golf Club in Auburn, Maine, he shared the lead with Ryan Wingard, who had just made back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to pull even. With Wingard in trouble off the tee, Hayes hit a pitching wedge from 137 yards to two inches. He tapped in that putt to secure the win and grab his first state mid-amateur title.

Hayes finished the tournament with rounds of 72-70, good enough for a two-shot win over Wingard, who was solo second at even par.

Wingard’s impressive performance must also be noted, though. He was 7 over after seven holes in the first round, and didn’t really figure into the competition at all. Then he rattled off five birdies and an eagle in his final 11 holes to get back to even par.

He kept the momentum going and pushed Hayes all the way to the last hole on Sunday, including the late birdies on 16 and 17.

Brian Bilodeau shot rounds of 72-74 for a 146 total that left him in third place. One shot back at 147 were Jeff Cole, Andrew Slattery and Mike Arsenault, Jr.
