THE WOODLANDS, TX (May 13, 2008)--Mid-Am Dan Cook of The Woodlands, Texas and Mark Lindberg of Coppell, Texas each posted a 1-under-par 71 on the 7154 yard Nicklaus course to capture a 1 shot lead over Robby McWilliams of Bossier City, LA. Tom Doughtie of Amarillo, TX is 2 shots back. John Grace of Fort Worth, TX, winner of the 1994 Texas State Amateur Championship, posted a 2-under-par 70 to capture a three-stroke lead over Charles Bagby of Birmingham, AL and Bill Sumner of Tomball, TX in the Senior Division.

Dan Cook, a member of the Club at Carlton Woods, has been fighting a lung infection and had not played in several weeks felt lucky to be playing. After finishing tied for 13th in 2006, he hurt his back in 2007 and was unable to play.  “I’ve not been able to play much recently. The last time I played out here was the match play tournament a couple of weeks ago.   I am lucky to be here. I’ve been sick in bed with a lung infection so today was just one of those magical days” said Cook.

After bogeying the 2nd hole, he got back to even par on the 4th with a birdie and played the remaining front nine holes at even par. On the back side, Dan made 2 bogies and three birdies to finish at 1 under par. “Anytime you finish under par here it’s a great round.  It exceeded my expectations today far beyond what I expected to do” Cook added.

Lindberg made three bogeys, a birdie and an eagle 3 on the 8th to finish the front nine with a 36. On the back, he got his score to -2 before stumbling on the 17th with a bogey to finish the day at -1.   Mark commented, “On the back side I hit greens and fairways. I hit it left on the 15th and had to punch out of the hazard. I got up and down for par there. Other than that I made the putts that I should make and missed the ones I wasn’t supposed to make.”

John Grace, who’s played in 34 USGA events and recently regained his amateur status, started the day with a bogey on the 1st hole but ended the front nine at 1 over par. He got the hot hand with the putter on the back nine starting on the 10th hole. He carded birdies on the 10th, 14th and 18th holes to shoot 33 on the back and 70 for the day. “Every putt I hit was difficult on these greens”, said Grace.  “I’ve played a lot of USGA events and the course reminded of a typical USGA setup. You are never able to relax on this course because there’s not an easy hole out here.  Every shot on this course has to be well thought out because if you get on the wrong side of the hole you’re dead.”  Grace leads a strong Senior Division field by 3 strokes. Defending Senior Champion, Bob Hullender is 6 strokes back.
