Florida Women’s Mid-Am: Shelby Braukmuller goes the distance

Coast-to-coast, wire-to-wire. However you like to say it, Shelby Braukmuller led the entire 2020 Florida Women’s Mid-Am.

The 22-year-old University of South Florida fifth-year senior prodded around Vero Beach Golf Club on Sunday following a first-round tie at 1-under alongside Taylor Morgan.

Kicking off her front nine with two bogeys on Nos. 2 and 5, Braukmuller rallied back to even-par on her day with birdies on Nos. 7 and 8. Out in 36, Braukmuller tripped up on the par-4 13th just as she had in her first round. Unable to shake her double-bogey from Saturday, she once again doubled the 13th to move to 3-over on the day.

Moving to the 16th and 17th, Braukmuller tapped back into her first round, posting back-to-back birdies to negate the dreaded double. Capping her round off with a bogey on 18, the dropped shot did not matter as Brockmuller accrued a 4-shot lead before she stepped onto the 18th tee.

“I’m so happy to start this season of golf with a win and am incredibly thankful to have so many people cheer me on through it all,” Brauckmuller told the FSGA.

With the win, Braukmuller becomes the youngest women’s mid-am champion in the eight-year history of the event.

Mariana Ocano, Heather Wall, and Tara Fleming all finished in a tie for second, three shots back of Braukmuller at 6-over, 150.
