The Pepperdine Women's Golf team could not have asked for a better start to the season.
Pepperdine won the Dick McGuire Invitational at the Championship Golf Course at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Waves won by 10 shots at 14-under, with Kansas finishing in solo second place at 4-under. They were the only two teams that finished under par.
Three Waves finished in the top 10, led by junior Lauren Gomez, who shot under par in all three rounds to tie for first at one point in the final round, but eventually finished tied for third. She shot rounds of 71-66-71.
Pepperdine began the day 14-under with an 11-stroke margin over the team in second place and stayed consistent throughout the day to finish at the 14-under mark.
The highlight of the tournament came in the second round for the Waves, as the team tied the lowest 18-hole score in program history with an 18-under 270. Throughout the two rounds on opening day, the Waves 14-under sits third in the record books for the lowest 36-hole score. Overall, the 14-under ranks seventh in records at Pepperdine.
This is the fourth time in program history Pepperdine has won this specific tournament, as the Waves accomplished the feat in the fall of the 2005-06, 2009-10 and 2013-14 seasons.
In the individual competition, McKenzi Hall of UNLV and Veronika Kedronova of Kent State tied for first place at 9-under. Kedronova shot a final round of 2-under 70 while Hall shot a final round of 1-under 71.
Lauren Lehigh of New Mexico joined Gomez of Pepperdine at 8-under to finish in solo third place and one shot behind the leaders.
