The University of Houston Cougars claimed victory at The All-American Championship at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas. The Cougars set the tone early with impressive rounds of 276 and 279 before closing with a 289 to finish at 20-under-par (844). Their dominant performance secured a nine-stroke victory over Troy, who posted rounds of 282-283-288 to finish at 11-under (853).
Rounding out the top five were TCU at 3-under, Southern Mississippi at 6-over, and Rice at 11-over.
Entering the final round with a 10-shot lead, Houston never gave up control, as Troy managed to trim the deficit by just one stroke. The Cougars' consistency was evident in their ability to avoid mistakes, making a tournament-low 36 bogeys while also leading the field with three eagles.
TCU led the tournament with 54 birdies, followed by Troy with 51. Houston, the eventual champions, recorded 49 birdies.
Houston’s par-4 scoring proved to be the difference-maker, as the team finished the tournament at 1-over on those holes—10 strokes better than their closest competitor. TCU did their scoring on the par-5s, finishing at 21-under, while Troy led par-3, scoring at even par, just ahead of Houston and Rice.
Troy’s Jake Springer took home individual honors after posting three steady rounds of 70-69-70 to finish 7-under. His consistency was key, as he made just four bogeys and eleven birdies throughout the event. He also led the field in par-3 scoring, carding four birdies without a single bogey.
Houston’s Chi Chun Chen was in contention after opening with rounds of 69 and a tournament-low 66, but a final-round 75 dropped him down the leaderboard. Chen was bogey-free for the first 36 holes but struggled in the final round with three bogeys and no birdies. Chen led the field in pars and made the fewest bogeys of any player.
Chen's teammate, Wolfgang Glawe, finished just behind him in third place at 5-under with rounds of 67-73-71. North Texas’ James Tureskis and Troy’s Brantley Scott completed the top five at 3-under.
The Houston Cougars will now turn their attention to the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, another event they will host on March 24-25 at Floridian National Golf Club.
