KALAUAO, OʻAHU (June 18, 2025) — Few amateur golfers have had a year quite like Tyler Loree. The Maui native and UCLA commit added a major title to his growing résumé with a dominant win at the 2025 Hawai‘i State Amateur Men’s Overall (Open + Mid-Amateur) Division, claiming a four-shot victory at even par over a field that included his future college and current University of Hawai‘i teammates.
With this win, Loree secured a spot in the 2025 U.S. Amateur Championship at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, placing him among the nation's elite amateurs. The Seabury Hall graduate became the first Maui Interscholastic League player to win two state high school titles and the fifth player in Hawai‘i history to successfully defend an individual state title.
Sony Open Spark
Before making waves at the state level, Loree made headlines nationally in January by shooting a 3-under 67 in the first round of the PGA TOUR’s 2025 Sony Open in Hawaiʻi, where he finished the day tied for 26th. Loree earned his place in the Sony Open by winning the HSGJA Qualifier and went on to card six birdies, including four in a row from holes 7 through 10. The performance came against a field that included the world’s top-ranked amateur, Luke Clanton.
Loree’s first round not only turned heads, but showed that his game could translate to the highest levels. Despite opening with two bogeys, his composed response with a string of birdies cemented his status as one of the top rising amateurs in the country.
Elite Company
Tyler Loree’s junior golf résumé already reads like that of a seasoned champion. He is the only boys’ player in Hawai‘i state history to record four consecutive top-three finishes at the HHSAA Boys Golf Championship. A three-time Maui Interscholastic League champion, he was also the first MIL golfer to win multiple individual state titles.
“Tyler proved that if you manage your game by placing approach shots into the correct areas, you can shoot a good score,” said Ryan Nagata, Rules and Competitions Director for the Hawai‘i State Golf Association. “He made almost all of the key par putts and played away from difficult hole locations with maturity beyond his years.”
U.S. Amateur Bound
As a result of his State Amateur win, Loree punched his ticket to the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship, set to take place August 14–17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. It will be his first appearance at the USGA's premier amateur event, joining a field stacked with national and international talent.
At just 18 years old, Loree has already competed on a PGA TOUR stage, collected two state high school titles, and now added a state amateur crown and U.S. Amateur qualification to his name. His rise signals the emergence of a new Hawaiian-born talent ready to take the next step in elite amateur golf.
