As the 2025 Masters Tournament captivates golf enthusiasts worldwide, it's an opportune moment to explore other masterpieces crafted by Augusta National's co-architect, Alister MacKenzie. Beyond the hallowed grounds of Augusta, MacKenzie's design philosophy has shaped numerous courses that continue to host prestigious amateur tournaments. Participating in these events offers golfers a unique opportunity to experience the strategic brilliance and aesthetic beauty inherent in MacKenzie's creations.

1. California State Fair Championship – Haggin Oaks (Sacramento, CA)

Held annually over Labor Day weekend, this 54-hole stroke play competition attracts top amateur talent from the western United States. 2. Alister MacKenzie Invitational Collegiate – Meadow Club (Fairfax, CA)

Hosted by the University of California, Berkeley, this 54-hole men's collegiate tournament brings together elite college golf teams to compete on the historic Meadow Club course. As MacKenzie's first American design, Meadow Club offers a blend of strategic bunkering and natural terrain that tests players' skills.

3. Sacramento City Men's Championship – Haggin Oaks (Sacramento, CA)

This 36-hole stroke play tournament is open to amateur golfers and is played on the Alister MacKenzie Course at Haggin Oaks. The event provides a competitive platform for local and regional players to experience a course steeped in history and architectural significance.

4. South of Ireland Championship – Lahinch Golf Club (Lahinch, Ireland)

Established in 1895, this prestigious amateur tournament is held annually on the Old Course at Lahinch Golf Club. MacKenzie's 1927 redesign introduced innovative features that continue to challenge competitors.

5. Sharp Park Club Tournaments – Pacifica, CA

This one’s different. You don’t need a college team or an international flight. You just need to join the club.

Yep—you can become a member at Sharp Park, MacKenzie’s only seaside public course in America. The Sharp Park Golf Club runs monthly tournaments like:

  • The Par 3 Shootout
  • 4-Person Scramble
  • 3-Club + Putter Monte
  • The infamous 666
  • Turkey Shoot
  • And the annual Alister MacKenzie Preservation Tournament

Engaging in these tournaments not only provides a platform for competitive play but also allows amateur golfers to immerse themselves in the legacy of Alister MacKenzie. Each course reflects his commitment to creating layouts that are both aesthetically pleasing and strategically challenging, offering a glimpse into the mind of one of golf's most influential architects.
