SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — As the 78th Western Intercollegiate Presented by Titleist unfolds at Pasatiempo Golf Club, one team’s presence marks a significant milestone: Nihon University, Japan’s most storied collegiate golf program, is making its debut in this prestigious NCAA Division I event.​

Founded in 1956, Nihon University’s golf team has long been a dominant force in Japanese collegiate golf. The program boasts numerous national championships and has produced over 200 professional golfers, including PGA Tour winner Shigeki Maruyama and Japan Golf Tour standout Shingo Katayama. ​

ABOUT THE Western Intercollegiate

54-hole men's college tournament hosted by San Jose State University. “The Western” is one of the most highly recognized national collegiate tournaments, conducted since 1946 Pasatiempo Golf Club; a historic venue where a player’s talent is always well-tested. Pasatiempo perennially ranks among the best by all of the major golf publications.

The format is slightly different than most college events. Six-player teams take the best five scores each round to determine the team score.
