USC junior Steve Lim and freshman Jeffrey Kang were both under par to help the Trojans, eighth overall, end on a high note during the final day of the 2011 USC Collegiate Invitational at North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village, Calif., on Tuesday (March 1).
With the 7:30 a.m. start delayed for the second day in row due to morning frost on the course, teams began play at 9 a.m., hustling to complete the remaining 28-30 holes of the 54-hole event.
And just as they did the second round, San Diego State and UCLA jockeyed for the lead throughout the final round. UCLA appeared near victory, but some late bogeys opened the door for the Aztecs, who won at 2-under 850 (282-279-289) for the school’s first title at the event. The Bruins finished in second at even 852 (280-286-286). Bruin Patrick Cantlay notched the individual win at 6-under 207 (67-72-68), UCLA’s first individual win since 2003 and fourth overall.
Troy finished eighth at 23-over 875 (283-304-288), a rough second-round that spanned days one and two doing in the Trojans.
USC’s Lim finished tied for 27th at 5-over 218 (69-81-68). Starting on the 12th hole, his final round opened with five birdies on the first six holes. He had seven birdies overall in the round to get to 3-under.
Kang (70-79-70), along with freshman Ramsey Sahyoun (71-77-71), tied for 29th at 6-over 219. Kang birdied three of the first five holes before bogeying four of the next six. He gathered himself from there, finishing his final seven holes at 2-under. Ramsey’s round featured three birdies and three bogeys.
Sophomore T.J. Vogel, who was second at the event last year, tied for 57th at 13-over 226 (73-74-79) while sophomore Martin Trainer tied for 70th at 17-over 230 (73-74-83).
Sophomore Stewart Hagestad, playing as an individual with sophomore teammate Sam Smith and senior teammate Bo DeHuff, led all USC players with a tie for 14th at 2-over 215 (72-72-71). Smith tied for 29th at 6-over 219 (72-76-71) while DeHuff tied for 73rd at 19-over 232 (78-83-71).
