RAYMORE, Mo. (July 10, 2011) -- Jon Troutman of Spring Hill withstood a late rally by Mark Terranova of Overland Park, to win the Open Division title. Troutman in the final round shot 1-under par for a 5-under par 208 total that was good for a 1 shot victory.

Standing on the 297 yard par 4 No. 16 Troutman had a 1 shot lead. Terranova with the honor choose to play conservative and hit a hybrid off the tee rather than going at the green on the shortened hole. After seeing Terranova hit it in the perfect position, Troutman also chose to play conservative and layed up.

“I can’t remember the last time I layed up” laughed Troutman, “but in this case I thought it was the smart thing to do with a one shot lead.”

Troutman’s conservative play resulted in par, but Terranova made birdie after hitting his wedge to within a few feet. All tied, Terranova’s nerves got the best of him and hit his tee shot on the 197 yard par 3 No. 17 in the water hazard making double bogey.

The championship was not yet over, on the 455 yard par 4 No. 18, Troutman hit a wayward drive into the woods and ended up making a double bogey. Terranova failed to capitalize on Troutman’s mistake and made bogey after his tee shot found the fairway bunker forcing him to hit short of the green.

Finishing in third place was Ryan Zech at 211. Zech is perhaps the hottest amateur in Kansas City. In the last month Zech has now finished third in the last two major championships, KC Amateur and The Watson Challenge. At The Watson Challenge, Zech was also Low Amateur.

Steve Groom of Raytown won “his biggest event ever” when he out dueled Tom Leonard of Leawood by a single shot to win the Senior title. Groom finished the championship at 4-under par. Leonard fired the championship’s low round of 66 to put a lot of pressure on Groom. However, Groom kept his nerves under control with a cool 2-under par 69.
