Kircher/Scorse defend title at NYSGA Four-Ball
VICTOR, New York (May 22, 2012)-- For the second day in a row the weather was perfect for scoring and birdies came in bunches for much of the field, but it was the consistency of the defending champions, JP Kircher and Jim Scorse that led them to defend their title at the NYSGA Four-Ball Amateur Championship at Ravenwood Golf Club.
Coming in with a two stroke lead, JP Kircher and Jim Scorse worked with machine-like precision and posted another solid round of 67, finishing the tournament at 12 under par. While yesterday it was Scorse’s iron game that made the difference, today it was Kircher’s putting that sealed victory. According to Scorse, “He was reading all the putts and made them all right in the center of the cup… If it was inside ten feet he made the putt.” Kircher humbly chimed afterward that it was the duo’s ability to “just stay out of trouble,” that was the key to their success. For the second straight day they did not post a bogey, the only team in the field to achieve that feat.
In second place was the team of Jonathan Clark of East Aurora CC and Jacob Kreuz or Park CC, who posted the day’s low round of 66 for a 134 total. Kreuz was also the youngest player in the field at 17 years of age.
In the Senior Division, the winners kept their lead with a consistent approach to the golf course. Blank and Dugan followed their stellar first round of 66 with a steady round of even par 72. “We hung in there [and] we kept making pars,” said Blank. “We didn’t have a lot of chances at birdie and when we did have a birdie putt, we didn’t make them.” The pair from Oak Hill Country Club was successful despite some scoring struggles and left as the Senior Division Champions. As the inaugural Senior Champions of the NYSGA Four Ball, they complimented the addition of a separate senior division. “There’s a lot of guys like us who stay competitive but can’t be competitive from the long tees… it a great thing to put the senior event in the field.”
The team of Paul Auletta and Randy Young ended up in the runner-up position at the Senior Four-Ball, four strokes behind after a solid second round of 70. The pair from Bellevue Country Club led the Senior field with seven birdies over the two days to secure the crystal hardware for their finish.
