JOHNSTOWN — A field of 74 players representing 19 states and the District of Columbia teed off at Sunnehanna Country Club on Tuesday in the opening round of the Sunnehanna Senior Invitational.
The Sunnehanna Invitational features some of the nation’s premier senior amateur golfers and is touted as one of the “majors of senior amateur golf” by amateurgolf.com.
The tournament format is 54-hole stroke play with contestants split into two divisions – Senior (ages 50-64) and Super Senior (age 65 & over).
John Armstrong of Frostburg, Md. holds a one-shot lead in the senior division after carding a 2-under 68 in the opening round.
Armstrong, ranked 19th nationally in Golfweek Magazine’s latest report, got off to a slow start by bogeying three of his first four holes, but rallied with four birdies late in the round (Nos. 14, 15, 16, 18) for a back-nine total of 31.
Larry Daniels of Seattle, Wash. was the only other player to break par and trails Armstrong by one stroke after posting a 69.
