ORLANDO, FL (March 17, 2017) -- On Friday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational Vanderbilt senior Matthias Schwab could never get things going and he ultimately missed the cut at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge.
Teeing it up for the first time on the PGA Tour, Schwab slipped up with a triple-bogey on the final hole of his first round and he was never truly able to recover. In his second round at Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Schwab was only able to muster one birdie while on the flip side bogeying five-times. In the end Schwab had to settle for a 4-over 76 and a 36-hole 6-over tally.
During his two rounds the two-time All-American did show flashes of what can be expected once Schwab does turn professional as he rolled in five birdies, including four during Thursday's first round.
The 36-hole cut ended up coming at 3-over.
For Curtis Luck, whose next official appearance will be at the Masters in April, it was an even more disappointing week. After struggling to Thursday 7-over 79, Luck shot a 10-over 82 on Friday. But things would soon get even worse as Luck signed an incorrect scorecard and as a result was disqualified from the event.
The news was first broke on Twitter by Brentley Romine of Golfweek.
It is expected that Luck will turn professional after he competes in the Masters.
FIRST ROUND RECAP
On Thursday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational Matthias Schwab made his PGA Tour debut and shot a 2-over 74.
The two-time All-American at Vanderbilt finished with a disappointing triple-bogey on the famed 18th hole at Bay Hill Club & Lodge but for most of the day Schwab was hovering around the even-par line.
After two pars Schwab double-bogeyed the 3rd hole only to rebound quickly with a 4th hole birdie and another on the 7th to return to level par. A senior for the Commodores, Schwab reached 1-under with a 10th hole birdie and following a bogey on the 11th he rolled in his final birdie on No. 16.
Schwab was able to make his first PGA start this week as the recipient of the Arnold Palmer exemption. The native of Austria earned the exemption into the field after being voted in by his peers at the 2016 Palmer Cup. The honor is given to the player that best embodies the `Arnold Palmer Legacy.'
On Friday Schwab will begin his second round at 2:08 p.m. He will tee of on the 10th hole and play alongside Robert Gamez and David Hronek.
Reigning U.S. Amateur champion Curtis Luck struggled to a 7-over 79 in his Arnold Palmer Invitational first round. Luck was able to birdie twice during the round but he was unable to keep the big numbers off his scorecard as he bogeyed five-times and double-bogeyed twice.
Luck will begin his second round early Friday morning on the 10th hole at 10:23 a.m. This week Luck is playing with J.J. Spaun and Grayson Murray.
