Scottie Scheffler led the Longhorns with a five-under 66
AUSTIN, TX (May 15, 2017)--Led by junior Scottie Scheffler, the University of Texas used its home course advantage to take a five shot lead after the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional at the University of Texas Golf Club.
Scheffler was one of three Longhorns to post a sub-70 round, making six birdies to finish at five-under-par 66. Doug Ghim followed with a 68, Gavin Hall scored 69, and Steven Chervony tied teammate Spenser Soosman at 74.
Texas is riding high into the NCAA postseason, having won its fifth straight Big 12 Championship with a late rally at Prairie Dunes Golf Club. Now back at home, their comfort playing at UT Golf Club is showing as they hope to continue their march to the NCAA Championship, and perhaps some redemption after last year's runner-up finish.
Two players sit tied with Ghim at three-under 68, and they both play for Ole Miss. Braden Thornberry and Ben Wolcott led the Rebels, with Wolcott going bogey-free. Josh Seiple and Kerry Sweeney both shot 73 and Noah West followed with a 74. Ole Miss sits five shots back at 282, the only other team round under par.
Ten-time NCAA Champion Oklahoma State is in third place at 287, ten shots back. Three teams--Iowa State, Arizona State, and North Carolina State--share fourth place at 290.
The low five teams and the low individual not on a qualifying team will qualify for the NCAA Championship, to be held at Rich Harvest Farms in Elk Grove, IL, May 26-31.
