Caleb Surratt one of two amateurs to qualify for the PGA's Farmers Insurance Open
Caleb Surratt, a freshman at the University of Tennessee who won the inaugural
Elite Amateur Series last summer, has earned a spot in this week's PGA TOUR's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines after winning a Monday qualifier held at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, Calif.
Three consecutive birdies on the back nine of the Jack Nicklaus layout led to a 3-under 69 for Surratt, giving him a two-stroke victory over fellow amateur
Harrison Kingsley, a senior at the University of San Diego and longtime PGA TOUR players Robert Garrigus and Spencer Levin.
Surratt also participated in the American Express Championship last week in La Quinta where he carded rounds of 71-69-69 (-7) only to miss the cut by three strokes. He also participated in the
Butterfield Bermuda Championship in November
Kingsley was a first-team All-West Coast Conference selection last season for the Toreros. He earned his first collegiate victory at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, shooting a tournament-record 15-under 201 (67-68-66).
The Farmers Insurance Open will tee off Wednesday on the North and South Courses at Torrey Pines and for the second year in a row will culminate in a Saturday finish.
