RESULTS: Nathan Miller Claims 2025 Northern Amateur in Tight Finish

Welcome to the 2025 Northern Amateur Championship

A Storied Tradition Since 1967

First played in 1967 and moved permanently to Sand Creek in 1983, the Northern Amateur has crowned champions who went on to PGA Tour prominence, including Howard Twitty (1970), David Ogrin (1978), Joe Ogilvie (1993), and Bo Van Pelt (1995). After a hiatus between 2002 and 2010 to promote junior golf via the Northwest Indiana Junior Golf Association (NIJGA), the event was revived in 2011 and continues to serve as a launchpad for future pros and decorated mid-ams. Winners have hailed from powerhouse collegiate programs like Oklahoma State, Indiana, Duke, and Arizona State.

Scoring and Course Conditions

Sand Creek’s championship-caliber design rewards precision and punishes hesitation, especially as winds off Lake Michigan shift throughout the day. Historically, the winning score hovers around 10-under, with 2024 champion Alec Cesare securing victory at 206 (−10). With firm greens and mild summer temperatures forecasted, players can expect prime scoring opportunities—but navigating the course's three distinct nines will still demand mental discipline and ball-striking excellence.

Looking Back to 2024—and Ahead to 2025

Last year, Alec Cesare of Indiana University edged the field by one with rounds of 66-69-71. Andrew Tan made headlines with a final-round 64, while Will Harvey and Jack Morris tied for third at −8. Cesare returns as the defending champion, but he'll face stiff competition from rising collegiate talents and hungry mid-ams. With several players from last year’s top 10 returning and new challengers from Texas, California, and Florida in the mix, the 2025 edition promises one of the strongest fields in recent memory.

🏁 Final Round Recap

Nathan Miller, an incoming freshman at TCU, captured the 2025 Northern Amateur title with a 9-under total of 207 at Sand Creek Country Club. Miller closed with a bogey-free 5-under 67 to erase a three-shot deficit and finished tied atop the leaderboard with 36-hole leader Liam Nelson before securing the victory.

Nelson, a junior at Miami (OH), posted a final-round 71 to match Miller at 9-under and earn solo runner-up honors. The Chicago native led outright after each of the first two rounds and turned in another steady round to cap a strong week.

Camron Jones (Indianapolis, IN) carded a 69 to finish solo third at 6-under 210, while Justin Sui (Lake Orion, MI) and Maverick Conaway (Tipton, IN) tied for fourth at 5-under 211. Sui turned in three straight under-par rounds, and Conaway remained a fixture near the top of the board throughout the week.

With deep talent and steady scoring from start to finish, the 2025 Northern Amateur once again delivered a competitive and memorable championship at Sand Creek.

📅 Round 2 Recap

Liam Nelson continued to pace the field at the 2025 Northern Amateur, following up his opening 67 with a 3-under 69 on Friday to reach 8-under through 36 holes at Sand Creek Country Club. The Miami (OH) junior added four more birdies in Round 2 and held a three-shot lead heading into Saturday's final round.

Maverick Conaway of the University of Indianapolis remained in solo second after a steady 70, putting him at 5-under for the tournament. Nathan Miller, the TCU-bound talent from Dallas, slipped to third after a 71 but remained well within striking distance at 4-under overall.

A logjam at 3-under included Camron Jones (Indianapolis, IN), Ray Filter (Crown Point, IN), Justin Sui (Lake Orion, MI), and Ben Keil (LaGrange, IN)—all of whom carded matching 70s to keep pressure on the leaders.

With the cut behind them and championship Saturday ahead, the title chase was wide open—and Sand Creek was primed for drama.

📝 Round 1 Recap

Liam Nelson, a standout from Miami (OH), grabbed the early lead at the 2025 Northern Amateur with a 5-under 67 on Thursday at Sand Creek Country Club. The Chicago native carded six birdies in a sharp opening round that put him two shots clear of the field.

In a tie for second at 3-under were Nathan Miller of Dallas, a TCU commit, and Maverick Conaway of Tipton, Indiana, a rising player for NCAA Division II program University of Indianapolis. Conaway’s steady play kept him bogey-free until the final holes, while Miller showed off the talent that has him bound for Big 12 competition.

Gavin Hare, also of Tipton, sat solo fourth after a 2-under 70. A group of six players shot 1-under 71 to share fifth, including Ben Keil (LaGrange, IN), James Roller (Jenks, OK), Charlie Kulwin (Chicago, IL), Camron Jones (Indianapolis, IN), Justin Sui (Lake Orion, MI), and Ray Filter (Crown Point, IN).

With tight scoring conditions and several big names within striking distance, Round 2 shaped up as a pivotal day at Sand Creek.
