MEQUON, WI (August 14, 2017) — Amateur players Garrett Jones and Brian Murtagh are among four leaders at 3-under par after the first round at the Wisconsin Open.
Jones, who finished within the top ten in last year’s event at Blackwolf Run, is looking to improve this year on the 6,900 yard par-72 North Shore Country Club layout. As one of nineteen players under-par after round one, the University of Wisconsin alumnus is in great position going into the final 54-holes.
Cardinal Stritch University Junior Brian Murtagh hopes to highlight the summer with a win before returning to class in the coming weeks. His day began smoothly, making birdies on the No. 2, 5, and 7 before his first bogey would come on the par-4 9th. After making pars on Nos. 10 through 13, Murtagh would make a double bogey on the 14th, bringing him back to a respectable, but not as preferable even-par. The Irish born athlete was able to dig deep after his mistake, though, and birdied three-in-a-row before making a closing par on the 18th.
Both players posted 69, making six birdies, a bogey and a double bogey a piece.
Tied with Jones and Murtagh from the professional ranks are Mt. Pleasant’s Ben Bendtsen III and Andy Buege of Abrams.
